Underlayment are the materials used to protect your roof decking, what is underneath your shingles. Back in the day felt was the most common and it is still used today. While felt is still used, technology has created better materials. The most widely used is synthetic. This material is a woven material that most closely resembles a tarp. Different climates have codes for different underlayment requirements. With that said, in Florida synthetic is fine but I prefer to use a ice and water type of underlayment. This underlayment is a polymer infused material, self sealing and self adhering. Some roofing contractors will use both. The eaves, ridge and valleys will get the polymer and the rest of the roof will get the synthetic. It is more specific as to where it goes and used, but I am trying to keep things simple. Due to weather in Florida I recommend using polymer type underlayment. Climate here is very damp so the polymer creates an almost water proof barrier between your roof decking and your interior. Some Insurance Companies offer a discount when polymer underlayment is used. For more information feel free to reach out. Till next time….
